“Brilliant” (The New York Times) Soprano Marielle Murphy, a native of Carmel, California, made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera for the 2023/24 season in the role of Oscar in David Alden’s production of Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera, under the baton of Carlo Rizzi. She has performed on operatic and concert stages across the United States and Europe. Favorite and recent roles include Konstanze (The Abduction from the Seraglio, Mozart), Cungegonde (Candide, Bernstein), Zerbinetta (Ariadne auf Naxos, Strauss), Oscar (Un Ballo in Maschera, Verdi), Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro, Mozart), and Gabriel/Eve (Die Schöpfung, Haydn), among many others. She appears in concert this spring at SandBox, an innovative venue for classical musicians in Sand City, California, alongside her sister, pianist Alana Murphy. She was recently seen as a guest artist in Tokyo at Theater X (Cai), performing alongside butoh dancer Tiziana Longo in her original piece entitled “Toro.”

Marielle made her European debut at the Salzburg Festival as La Charmeuse in Massenet’s Thaïs alongside Plàcido Domingo with the Munich Radio Orchestra. Various guesting and residency engagements followed in opera houses across the German-speaking region of Europe, such as Theater Aachen, Oper Leipzig, Opera Bern, Theater für Niedersachsen, and Theater Münster, where she was engaged as a soloist for four seasons.

She has won awards from such competitions as the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the George London Foundation, the Licia Albanese - Puccini Foundation, New Jersey State Opera, Henry and Maria Holt Scholarship, and the Carmel Music Society. She has also performed in the final rounds of the Francisco Viñas Competition (Barcelona), the Belvedere Competition (South Africa), and the Concorso Angelo Loforese (Milan).

An alumna of the Eastman School of Music, Marielle began voice lessons on the Monterey Peninsula with mezzo-soprano Linda Purdy, and was subsequently mentored closely by the late dramatic coloratura Rita Shane. She received additional training from the Aspen Music Festival and School, Bel Canto at Caramoor, and the Salzburg Festival. She is an avid yogi, classical guitar enthusiast, proud Pomeranian Mama, and botanical illustration hobbyist.
